Our Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Spot.

Initially, Lux could seem closer to a challenging scholarly challenge rather than a new popular music project from an artist who just had a last hit featured an international K-pop icon. Divided into four distinct parts and performed in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying symphonic album exploring feminine mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, frequently via the lens of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to fuse the past and modern styles, the scale feel much greater here, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, you still want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated string surge thuds down with comedic force. The song immediately segues to the wild single featuring racing strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—nor wish to know—where you will go next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally distinct place from where it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves straddling the line between bold experimentation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that the album has achieved the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks as it spirals upward. This trick gets echoed by a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the characters at it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
