The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
